The Disability KaR programme cannot provide funding for individual projects or organisations.

The Disability Knowledge and Research Programme (Disability KaR) was funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

Funding for the Disability KaR programme ran from September 2003 until August 2005 and totals £1.4m.

The programme comprised of a number of areas:

  • Disability research projects. Seven research reports focusing on the theme of Mainstreaming Disability in Development, and a study on how disabled people can actively engage in reducing poverty.
  • DFID policy project. This includes the placement of a disability policy officer within DFID, and a series of research projects to analyse the evidence of links between disability and poverty, the budget for this work is £175K.
  • Disability equality training. Run by the Overseas Development Group at the University of East Anglia.
  • Knowledge and communication strategy. This part of the programme aims to improve access to information and knowledge on disability issues. A total of £273K supports the range of activities including; a number of publications, online communication tools, and three regionally based face-to-face events to encourage dialogue between different stakeholders in the North and South.
  • Six competition projects. These aim to develop and support sustainable technologies that combat the effects of disability and poverty. The funding awarded to these projects totals £614K

In addition, £136,000 has been allocated to respond to initiatives that emerge through the work of the programme.
