This project aimed to improve transport accessibility for disabled people. The project designed and tested low-cost technologies and practices that improve information on public bus and minibus services. Disability groups were involved in the selection, testing and evaluation of the technologies.

Research shows that many people with sensory and intellectual disabilities do not have access to information on accessibility, routes and fares in appropriate formats. Transport providers also lack information on how to cater for such passengers. Accessible transport information will increase the ability of disabled people to travel. Ultimately this will improve opportunities for work and increased livelihoods, and so contribute to poverty relief.

Promising technologies and practices were identified, robustness of design and manufacture improved, and performance in practice were tested. The adoption of successful technologies was promoted through direct demonstration of the results and the production of detailed design guidelines. These were communicated to a range of specialist audiences, including vehicle manufacturers, policy bodies and standards bodies.

The project outputs:

Prototypes of universal design information features for large and small buses, fitted to two or more demonstration vehicles in India and South Africa

Detailed design guidelines on the manufacturing specifications, operation and maintenance of the features

Dissemination of the prototypes and guidelines through exhibitions, media, transport networks and conferences

Final report describing the outcomes of the project.
