The three countries involved were:

1. India
2. Rwanda
3. Cambodia

Three countries; India, Rwanda and Cambodia, were included in the Policy Project in-country research, run as part of Policy project.

The research, was commissioned and carried out by the Disabiltiy Policy Officer in response to a detailed mapping report of DFID and disability issues. The research aimed to:

  • Explore how disability relates to DFID’s work on reducing poverty and social exclusion and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
  • Map disability-focused activities in each country
  • Explore the opportunities and constraints for raising the profile of disability within each DFID programme
  • Identify potential partners for DFID to take forward work on disability.
  • The research comprised of desk review of literature and field visits to the three countries. The research method included semi-structured interviews and visits to disability organisations, as well as focus group discussions and follow-up interviews with people with disabilities.
  • Identify examples of best practice
  • Identify a network of support partners for DFID

The outputs of the in-country research aimed to be relevant and useful to the DFID country offices themselves, as well as the work of Policy Division and in particular the new Exclusion, Rights and Justice (ERJ) Team.
